Tricks and tips

You don't have to fly directly to your destination

Check out fares to nearby cities as they might be much cheaper. Most of the major cities are close, European trains are great, and you get to see bonus destinations.

You don't have to stay in the city center

Venice is notoriously expensive, but you can find budget stays in Mestre or Marghera, which are only 10 mins away from Venice. Tickets cost about €1 - less than metro ride in many cities - and the trains leave every 5-6 mins. And guess what - you won't have to drag your luggage all across the Venice bridges or pay for expensive water taxi.

Check out events calendar

Your visit can be much more meaningful if you include something special - a festival, an exhibition, a fashion week, an opera, a regatta or a race - options are limitless. These cities have so much happening all year round.

Itinerary

Day 1: Milan | Arrival

Milan is a nice place for sightseeing, culture or just a bit of a busy city life. If you choose to fly here, you'll definitely have a good time. Other good nearby airport hubs to arrive in are Turin, Bologna and Florence.

Days 2-5: Venice, Murano and Burano

In several days you have a chance explore Venice beyond major touristic areas. Take your time discovering all of its secrets and hidden gems, go to Arsenale and Giardini della Biennale to see exhibition pavilions, take a trip to Lido for a film festival, and visit Murano and Burano Islands.

Day 6: Verona

Verona is halfway from Venice to Milan, and it's a great place to stop by. If you visit it during summer, you have an opportunity to experience grandiose performance right in the ancient amphitheater. Check tickets for Arena di Verona Opera Festival in advance to plan your trip.

Day 7: Milan | Departure

Time to go back to your city of arrival at the end of your journey. Take this time to go shopping, get souvenirs and enjoy a fine dinner before your departure.

Final thoughts

Who is this itinerary for

This route includes wonderful cities full of events all year round. Perfect for those who want to experience local lifestyle beyond touristic traps and make fantastic memories.

What would I've done differently

During my first visit to Verona, I've noticed the decorations for opera but didn't give it much thought. A year later I was visiting exactly during the festival, but, what a shame, I didn't plan it and didn't have an extra day for it. So, better check events in advance to not waste a perfect opportunity.

Overall impression

There is never a low season in the city - there is something to experience throughout the year. I've been returning to these destinations several times and always discovered something new. You won't have a boring day there.
