Exploring the Aegean: 8 Days in Greece + Istanbul
From the majestic architecture of Athens, to the Minotaur's Labyrinth of Crete and the white-washed cliffside villas of Santorini, this 8-day trip will take you to three absolutely different locations in Greece. And for an extra bonus, you can visit Istanbul, the historic and vibrant city at the crossroads of East and West.
Highlights
Athens
Whether it's your first time in the city or you're a regular, there is something to explore for everyone. There are plenty of must-see attractions, such as the Acropolis, the Ancient Agora, and the National Archaeological Museum. If you're looking for something different, the quaint Plaka neighborhood is perfect for leisurely strolls and discovering unique shops. When the sun sets, the city is alive with buzzing restaurants, rooftop bars, and vibrant nightlife. With so much to do and explore in Athens you won't be disappointed.
Santorini
Located in the middle of the Aegean Sea, Santorini is an island paradise, offering breathtaking views, unique architecture and a captivating atmosphere. From secluded coves to bustling black sand beaches, there are plenty of places to relax. For those looking to experience something unique, the island has several archaeological sites and the volcano. With its stunning scenery and relaxed ambiance, Santorini is the perfect place to experience the beauty of the Cyclades.
Crete: Heraklion and Rethymno
Heraklion is Crete's largest city and has many historical sites, such as the Palace of Knossos and the Heraklion Archaeological Museum. There is also plenty of opportunity to experience the city's lively nightlife, with numerous restaurants and bars to choose from. Alternatively, the city of Rethymno offers a more tranquil experience, with its old Venetian port, castle ruins, and idyllic beaches. There is also plenty of opportunity to try the delicious local cuisine and to enjoy a relaxing stroll along the charming cobbled streets.
Istanbul
Visiting Istanbul in just one day can be a great way to get a taste of the city. Consider visiting some of the city's most famous sites, like the Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque and Topkapi Palace. Take a Bosphorus cruise to get a glimpse of Istanbul's iconic skyline from the water. Of course, no trip to Istanbul would be complete without a visit to one of its lively markets, like the Grand Bazaar, sample local cuisine and shop for souvenirs.
Tricks and tips
Transfer can also become a part of your trip
Take advantage of cheap plane tickets with transfer and take a bonus day tour, for example, in Istanbul. Just make sure you have enough time and don't forget to check visa requirements for your transfer destination as well.
Try different modes of transportation
Experience Aegean Sea from water on a ferry and from above on a plane. In some cases, ferries between islands are either too long or cost like flights, so it's worth trying both.
Research local ferries schedule
You don't want to be stuck on the island with no way out. Unlike buses and trains, ferries don't depart really often, you should plan ahead to avoid unpleasant situations.
Itinerary
As I took it
Day 0: Istanbul | Arrival
Transfer in Istanbul offers a good opportunity to get to know the city which was founded on the former site of the Greek colony of Byzantion.
Days 1-2: Athens
Start your adventure in Greece by exploring the city known for laying the foundations for Western civilization.
Days 3-6: Santorini
For a different experience in Greece, explore Cyclades - a group of more than 200 islands. The most popular are Santorini, Mykonos, Paros and Naxos.
Days 7-8: Crete | Departure
Distance from Santorini to Crete is relatively small and can be covered in short ferry. Crete is a major destination and I was able to find direct flight back to my country from here.
Reverse
Day 0: Istanbul | Arrival
You can add a day or two in this unique city either before or after your journey to Greece depending on which is more convenient to you, either way is great.
Days 1-2: Crete
This island has a lot to offer, but an absolute must-see is the legendary Labyrinth of the Minotaur.
Days 3-6: Santorini
There are many group tours and ferries to Santorini from Crete. This paradise destination is the perfect balance of sightseeing and beach vacation.
Days 7-8: Athens | Departure
The fastest and most spectacular way to get to Athens from Santorini is by air. See the ruins, walk through charming streets with shops and restaurants.
Final thoughts
Who is this itinerary for
This itinerary has a perfect balance of historical sites, charming towns and relaxing beaches. See different Greece in one trip. Transportation between ports and islands is stress-free but requires planning in advance.
What would I've done differently
In my opinion, Crete is an amazing island with a lot to explore, but can be underestimated when visiting after overwhelmingly glamorous Cyclades. For this reason, I suggest reversed route: begin your adventure in relaxed pace on Crete, continue on the islands, finish in Athens where you definitely won't be bored.
Overall impression
I would absolutely love to repeat this route with some alterations. Athens and Istanbul are great cities and I would gladly make an extra stop there each time flying somewhere. Santorini was truly a paradise and I would repeatedly choose it, while reducing days there to add other islands nearby. Crete is incredibly big island and deserves a separate itinerary, as only two days are not nearly enough to see all of its wonders.
